The branching is not dichotomous, but rather sympodial: the side branch that develops below the main shoot takes over, so that it attains the direction and strength of the main shoot. Meanwhile, the main shoot ceases to grow and becomes a side branch. This switch occurs at every node over and over again. Flowers usually terminate "side" branches and thus are scattered on the plant.
