May 1,
Mt. Greylock State Reservation and vicinity, North Adams
A grove at mid-slope of Mount Greylock. To someone like us, inhabitants of eastern part of the state, the uphill habitat of this birch seems rather unusual. Our perception of this birch as a tree belonging to low, moist/wet habitats had to be broadened when we found yellow birch common all the way up to nearly the very summit of the tallest mountain in Massachusetts!
