August 29,
Plymouth Long Beach, Plymouth
At the end of August many plants are already finishing their life, dispersing scores of fruits. Each fruit consists of two parts (joints) that fall off separately, at different times. The upper joint, which takes off first, is spongy and covered with firm skin, so it floats well. The bottom joint stays on the plant for a while, dries out, and then breaks off and travels with the wind. Each of the two joints contains a single seed.
