The genus Hylodesmum was segregated from Desmodium in 2000. Its name emphasizes the close relation to Desmodium as well as ecological preferences of the new genus--deeper shaded woody areas as compared to light requirements of Desmodium ("hylo" means "pertaining to woods").
In this species, inflorescence arises from apex of leafy stem, where all leaves are crowded.
