This bright, intricate flower is pollinated by ruby-throated hummingbirds, the only species of hummingbird that occurs in the Northeast. The flower features a two-lobed upper lip and three-lobed lower lip. Five stamens are united in a tube and grow through a split in the upper lip, two of the five anthers bearded at the top.
