This huge shrub in the Ponkapoag Swamp decorated with dry fruit, nearly as tall as surrounding Atlantic white cedars, visible from the Ponkapoag Trail during the winter had intrigued us for a few years before we finally undertook a breakthrough across the winter swamp only to find out that this was a very tall maleberry. Gigantic maleberries 5-6 m tall are not infrequent at the Ponkapoag.
