Whorled aster's leaves are alternate, but appear to be whorled. Cronquist called this arrangement "a pseudowhorl." Leaves are acuminate (long-pointed), hence the Latin name acuminatus/acuminata . This aster was growing in a swamp, right in peat moss, though it has a vast ecological range and may be found in dry woods as well.
